Biography


USC alum C.Courtney Joyner is a writer whose first major output was a string of more than 25 movie screenplays beginning with The Offspring (AKA, From a Whisper to a Scream) and Prison, directed by Renny Harlin, and continuing in the '90s with Class of 1999, the CBS telefilm Distant Cousins, and Paramount/Full Moon features like Puppetmaster III, and H.P. Lovecraft's The Lurking Fear, the latter which he also directed.

A noted film historian, Joyner’s articles and criticisms have appeared in more than twenty different publications, ranging from The Hollywood Reporter, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Fangoria, Cinema Retro, Wildest Westerns, to True West, where he served as Film and TV editor for three years.  His critically acclaimed film book, The Westerners has been followed by contributions to biographies of John Wayne and Lon Chaney, and histories of horror and western movies, including Trash Cinema, My Favorite Horror Film, The Book of Lists: Horror, and It Came from the Video Aisle, among many others.  His newest filmbooks  are Western Portraits: Unsung Western Heroes and Villians of the Silver Screen, co-authored with filmaker Steve Carver and Warner Brothers Fantastic: A Guide to the Studio's Horror, Science-Fiction, and Fantasy Films. 

Joyner has provided on-camera film history and commentary for more than 90 blu-ray and dvd releases for every major studio, crossing all genres from westerns. serials, horror to drama. His latest contributions are to the releases of the classic films, This Island Earth, The Far Country, An American Werewolf in London, as well as a feature length documentary on legendary director Raoul Walsh.
 
Joyner is also featured in the new documentary Straight to Video, and he is the co-executive producer and appears in Daniel Griffith's massive project Celluloid Wizards of the Video Wasteland: The Rise and Fall of Charles Band's Empire Pictures, which will have its film festival debut in 2019.

Joyner is an award-winning author of short stories and novels, having created the Shotgun mass market paperback series for Pinnacle Books, with four installments so far: Shotgun, Shotgun: The Bleeding Ground, Bushwacked: The Bloody Saga of John Bishop, and the just-released These Violent Times, with more installments planned. Shotgun was nominated by the Western Fictioneers as Best First Novel.  His short stories have appeared in more than a dozen anthologies, including Hell Comes to Hollywood, Law of the Gun, The Traditional West, Beat to a Pulp, and A Time for Violence.  His work has earned him two Peacemaker litterarature nominations for Best Short Story from the Western Fictioneers of America.  He is also a recipient of The President's Award from The Western Writers of America.
 
In the world of fantasy=adventure, he has written the sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Nemo Rising published by Tor Books in 2018.  The well-recieved interpretation of Jules Verne, combined with true history and draped in steampunk trappings, will be issued as a trade paperback in 2019, along with the highly-anticipated Nemo Rising: Robur the Conquerer boardgame from WizKids.  Nemo Rising has also been optioned by producers Brady Krevoy and Amy Krell as a series for cable television.
